These poems are harsh and stark and cynical,
But they are truthful and realistic
Reality is harsh, that is the truth.
Langston Hughes simply tells it like it is:
Life is harsh, unfair, unjust, and ugly
It is wearisome for those who are black.
Love is fleeting, painful, and hurts a lot.
Death is painful and inevitable.
Love and Death make for an arduous life.
Dreams are an important part of life too.
Blacks dream of a better life for themselves
And these dreams are hardly ever realized,
But dreams bring hope which keeps people going
That’s the way the world is, plain and simple.
